The research centre of the Arnold Schönberg Complete Edition is located at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, Berlin. As a historical-critical edition, it comprises the entire compositional oeuvre of Arnold Schönberg, including all surviving sketches and drafts. Nevertheless, it is committed not only to scholarship but also to musical practice.

The editing work is supported by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities, represented by the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, and with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Bonn, and the Senate Department for Education, Science and Research, Berlin, until 2014 also by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna. In addition, the Complete Edition was included in the funding programme of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2001, 2003 and 2006. The Schönberg Complete Edition works within the framework of a cooperation agreement with the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, in whose archives the composer's estate is kept.

The Complete Edition is published jointly by Schott Music, Mainz, formerly B. Schott's Söhne, and Universal Edition AG, Vienna. Recently, performance materials and study scores based on the text of the Complete Edition have become available for works published by Universal Edition.

The score of the Gurre-Lieder, published in 2001, was awarded the German Music Edition Prize in the category of musicological complete editions.

The Schönberg-Gesamtausgabe is a member of the Independent Research Institutes section of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung.
